WOMEN AT THE HEART OF AGRICULTURE: CELEBRATING RURAL INNOVATORS ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

On the 8th of March, COREnet wants to draw attention to the important contributions of women in fostering innovation and sustainability in agriculture and rural communities.

The role women play in agriculture and rural economies is vital to guide farm businesses and community growth in rural areas. Women are central figures as both farmers and entrepreneurs involved in off-farm work across various sectors, while also carrying the responsibility for the care and welfare of their families. However, women often face challenges such as discrimination and limited access to formal employment and social protections.

On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, COREnet wants to emphasize the key role and significance of women in the agriculture sector by showcasing inspiring stories and initiatives from three partner countries: Italy, Hungary and Belgium.

These initiatives exemplify how women are overcoming barriers and making significant strides in the agricultural sector. By fostering empowerment, addressing gender-specific challenges, and promoting sustainable practices, these stories showcase the positive impact of targeted support and inclusive policies.

Coldiretti Donne Impresa – Empowering women in agriculture

Coldiretti’s ‘Donne Impresa’ initiative stands as a testament to the empowering role of women in agriculture, advocating for their presence in decision-making positions and supporting female entrepreneurs within the sector. Celebrating women’s contribution to agriculture, the program focuses on enhancing the visibility and influence of female farmers while promoting sustainable farming practices. Through cultural activities and policy proposals, it addresses gender equality and the professional challenges women face in the agricultural field.

Donne Impresa highlights its longstanding commitment to championing women’s rights in Italy, dating back to 1953. Over the years, the initiative has been instrumental in pushing for equal representation and opportunities, from advocating for maternity protection to securing legislative advancements for women in agriculture. Today, Donne Impresa continues to influence national and European policies, ensuring that women’s voices remain central to the agricultural industry’s future.

Corteva Agriscience – Hungarian women in agriculture

In 2023, Corteva Agriscience released a study on the challenges women in agriculture face in Hungary, highlighting the need for more action to address gender discrimination in the sector. The study, based on responses from over 200 women in agriculture, reveals that while 70% of women feel discrimination is an issue, many are optimistic that progress toward gender equality is possible within the next decade. Despite facing challenges like work-life balance and lower incomes compared to their male counterparts, women in agriculture remain passionate about their work, valuing job satisfaction and skill development.

The research also emphasizes the role of gender equality initiatives in reducing discrimination and supporting women in sustainable farming practices. Women farmers, who are often more environmentally conscious, face systemic barriers such as limited access to land, credit, and training, which prevent them from fully benefiting from EU agricultural policies. To address these issues, researchers suggest targeted financial incentives, gender-specific data collection, and education programs to empower women farmers and help them contribute to sustainable agricultural development.

Steunpunt Korte Keten – Women at the front of SFSCs advice

Steunpunt Korte Keten plays a vital role in promoting short supply chains in Flanders, with a significant portion of its work focused on supporting women in agriculture. Approximately 65-70% of entrepreneurs seeking advice and training from the organization are women, a trend that is particularly pronounced in sectors like farm dairy, where nearly 90% of participants are women. These women are essential in driving the growth and professionalization of the short supply chain sector, benefiting from services such as business guidance, training, and networking opportunities.

The gender dynamics within the Steunpunt Korte Keten are further highlighted by the fact that all the advisors within the organization are women, reinforcing the important leadership role women play in this sector. Women also represent over 80% of those engaged in education linked to short supply chain activities, demonstrating their strong presence and commitment to sustainable, direct-to-consumer farming practices. This shows the growing impact of women in shaping the future of agriculture in Flanders.

COREnet will continuously dedicate attention and contribute to let emerge these inspiring examples of women led initiatives in rural development. Through their determination and innovation, women are transforming both the agricultural landscape and rural communities, paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous future.
