On March 14th, an important event took place at the Department of Economics of the University of Foggia, highlighting the intersection of academia, agriculture, and sustainability.
Professor Piermichele La Sala, Vice Coordinator of the COREnet project, opened the event with a speech on the importance of agricultural economics for local farmers and the agri-food supply chain. He highlighted the key role of advisory services in multifunctional agriculture, short food supply chains, food value, and sustainability, critical to safeguarding local resources and preserving authenticity.
On this occasion, a prestigious recognition — Laurea honoris causa in Bank, Finance, and Markets — was awarded to Vincenzo Gesmundo, General Secretary of the Italian farmers’ association Coldiretti. This honor was granted for his outstanding dedication and passion, which have led to concrete changes in the agri-food economy over the years, with a strong commitment to promoting sustainability and innovation in agriculture. His work has also focused on protecting “Made in Italy”, supporting small farmers and local producers, and defining a new path for co-creation between consumers and farmers, exemplified by the farmers’ market Campagna Amica, a partner of the COREnet project.

This also highlights the role of the University, which is committed to training professionals who are prepared to enhance local production and tackle global challenges, through various courses, projects, and initiatives with local stakeholders. Over 500 participants attended the event, including several distinguished representatives of local and national institutions, together with citizens, local associations, students, and many farmers, all gathered to emphasize the importance of agriculture and agri-food production for our local development. After the event, some stands with agri-chefs offered lunch prepared with foods coming from local farmers.
