CORENET STORIES: THE SUSTAINABLE FISHING SUCCESS STORY OF CABAZ FRESCOMAR

In the small harbor of Fuseta, in Portugal’s Algarve region, a quiet transformation is taking place in the world of sustainable fishing.

Cabaz Frescomar, an initiative launched by the Fuseta Fishing Vessel Owners Association, is redefining the connection between local fisheries and consumers through a model rooted in fairness, sustainability, and short food supply chains. Sonia Olin, Director of the Association of Fishermen, explains how the project works in practice.

Working with around 100 traditional fishing vessels, the project delivers 60 to 70 baskets of fresh fish per week directly to households. All fish is locally caught, ensuring transparency, freshness, and minimal environmental impact.

Beyond its commercial success, Cabaz Frescomar addresses broader challenges in the fishing sector. Many of the participating boats are old and operate under difficult conditions. The initiative aims to improve working conditions, increase product quality, and find new markets for lesser-known or previously discarded species—thereby reducing waste and increasing income for fishers.

This innovative and community-based model has caught the attention of COREnet, which recognises Cabaz Frescomar as a “Golden Case”—a leading example of how small-scale fisheries can contribute to local economies. Cabaz Frescomar now serves not only as a local success story but also as a reference point for sustainable fisheries across Europe.
