CORENET STORIES: FROM PERI-URBAN FARMS TO CITY TABLES

How the City of Kraków strengthens local food connections through digital tools and closer links between producers and urban consumers.

His role involves working across the entire food system, bringing together producers, consumers and the many actors in between. Understanding how these different stakeholders interact is essential to identifying where the system can be strengthened, particularly as cities face growing challenges linked to climate change and food security.

For Kraków, Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) can play an important role in this transition. By strengthening connections between peri-urban farms and consumers, local food systems can become more resilient while creating new opportunities for producers and improving access to locally sourced food.

Digitalisation can support this process. Digital tools and platforms can make it easier to connect supply and demand, improve cooperation between different actors and help local producers reach consumers more effectively, although developing these solutions also requires the right knowledge and expertise.

This is where projects such as COREnet can make a valuable contribution. By bringing together research, practical experience and specialist knowledge from across Europe, COREnet helps policymakers and local stakeholders better understand how digital short supply chains can work in practice and what is needed to support their development.

As Kraków continues developing its approach to food policy, collaboration between cities, producers, advisors, researchers and local communities will be key to building a food system that is better prepared for the challenges ahead.
