CORENET STORIES: BUILDING NEW MARKET PATHWAYS FOR HUNGARY’S SMALL-SCALE FARMERS

How training and advisory networks empower 21,000 farmers to grow, connect, and innovate

In Hungary, over 21,000 small-scale farmers are searching for new ways to sell their products, reach consumers, and sustain their livelihoods. Many of them want to learn how to access markets, boost their visibility, and diversify their farming activities – challenges that have become increasingly crucial across the country.

“Farmers are looking for new ways to sell, connect with consumers, and network with other farmers,” explains Katalin Kujáni, President of Hungarian National Association of small scale farmers and Trebag project manager. “But they often struggle to find innovative market opportunities or the right support to start”.

Ten years ago, there were no advisors available to visit farmers and help them build or join short food supply chains. To address this gap, in 2019 the team developed a guidebook and training materials for informal advisors working with local producers. These resources help advisors understand local food systems, assess farmers’ needs, and strengthen community-based value chains.

By empowering advisors and farmers alike, Hungary’s COREnet partners are building the foundation for a more resilient, connected, and innovative rural economy – one where small-scale farmers can truly thrive.
