CORENET STORIES: STRENGTHENING LOCAL NETWORKS FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN ALGARVE

The In Loco Association shares insights on building connections between local producers, communities, and the tourism sector to promote sustainability and regional development.

The Algarve region is widely recognised for its natural beauty, rich resources, and agricultural heritage.

While tourism is one of its main economic drivers, the value of its more remote rural areas is often underestimated. These areas are vital for preserving traditions and promoting sustainable use of local resources.

Artur Gregório, from the In Loco Association, highlights the importance of fostering communication between all parts of the local economy — especially between production and consumption.

“Our economic structure is very small,” he explains, “It’s really important in short circuits that communication between production and consumption exists and functions here”. They have been working for 36 years to build these connections based on local traditions, seasonal rhythms, and regional identity.

As a private non-profit organization founded in 1988, In Loco is committed to sustainable development and active community participation. It promotes environmental education, supports rural development, and plays a leading role in preserving the Mediterranean lifestyle through transnational cooperation.

Through its involvement in a European network of advisors, In Loco contributes to a growing partnership of consultants working to establish sustainable short food supply systems across the continent.
